Where the monthly bill of a vibe-coded app actually comes from, and which parts grow when users show up

People say their builder got expensive without saying which part. An app has several separate costs and only some of them grow with users. No prices here on purpose: they change, so read each pricing page on the day you decide.

Flat, or nearly flat

  • The builder subscription or credits, if you use one.
  • A domain name.
  • A basic hosting plan.

Grows with users

  • Database size and the number of requests it handles.
  • Storage for uploaded files.
  • Emails and SMS.
  • Auth, once you pass a free monthly-active-user limit.
  • AI API calls, if your app calls a model. This is often the biggest line and it scales with how much each user does.

Four questions for any provider

  1. What happens at the free limit: does the app pause, slow down or start charging?
  2. Is there a hard cap or a budget alert, so a spike cannot surprise you?
  3. What is the next tier, and what jumps in price?
  4. Can I take my code and data with me? A repo you own and a normal Postgres database mean you can move.

A quick forecast

Count users × actions per user per day × cost per action. Do it for the AI calls first, then for database reads and writes. Even a rough number shows which line to worry about.

When you compare Lovable, Bolt, Base44 or a stack you assemble yourself, compare line by line like this instead of comparing monthly totals.

Prompt: map this app's costs

Paste this into Claude Code, Cursor, Codex or any agent that can run commands.

List every external service this app uses: database, auth, file storage, email or SMS, AI APIs and hosting. For each one, say whether its cost grows with the number of users, what the provider does at its free limit, and which pricing page I should read. Then estimate usage per user for the AI calls and database writes from the code, and show a table. Do not guess prices; tell me where to look them up.

What Traceshield does here, and what it doesn’t

Traceshield puts hosting, database, sign-in, repo and domain in one account, so those lines stay in one place. Paid plans are marked as coming soon on the main page, so check what is live today before you compare.
